'Saoradh' is a Scots Gaelic word meaning 'Liberator' and is pronounced a bit like 'Sarah' in English. It's a Petersen Type L style from the 9th to 10th century. Many of this type have been found in Britain, one as near as 12 miles away from our location here in Scotland. Because the type L is associated with Celtic, Anglo Saxon, and Scandinavian cultures, the decoration on this sword and scabbard reflect zoomorphic patterns that were typical in all three cultures during the Viking Age. The Saoradh features original artwork and carvings loosely based on designs found in 'the Book of Kells'. The bronze hilt is constructed in three parts with the tang through the upper guard and the pommel riveted to the upper guard. Stirling Silver twisted wires adorn the pommel. The grip is Olive wood and the scabbard is Tiger Maple. Hollow ground and fullered, hardened and tempered, high carbon steel hand forged blade, sharpened. The thickness of the blade tapers from 9/32" at the hilt to 3/32" near the tip, giving this sword a beautiful balance and feel.

Blade 28.25" (72 cm), 34.25" (87 cm) overall, balance point 4" from hilt

Sword weighs 1.3 kg, 2 lbs. 13 oz.
