The entire sword and scabbard are based on a bronze crossguard found in Norway. The bronzework of the ancient crossguard featured a worn interlace design which had to be worked out by pen and paper, then carved into a wax model before casting a new one. It is known the original crossguard was from a Type O Viking sword and so I 'filled in the blanks', borrowing from other complete swords of this type to bring back a piece that history had lost. All the carvings on the bronze and woodwork match the carving design of the museum photo of the original crossguard (from Ian Peirce's book Swords of the Viking Age). This was constructed in line with Viking tradition, so that the pommel is riveted to the upperguard, the tang is through the upper guard and peened over. All sand cast bronze fittings with sterling silver twisted wires on the pommel, Rosewood handle, and Mohagany scabbard with stag antler belt loop. The blade is high carbon German steel, hardenened, tempered, polished by hand. The edges are blunt but can be sharpened upon request.
