The scabbard carvings for the type H sword celebrate the plesiosaurus that is said to roam about Loch Ness. At first glance, the monster appears as a serpent, reminding of the 'serpentine' Viking ship prows. The most famous of these is the 9th century ship found in Oseberg, Norway. The interlacing sea creatures on the scabbard replicate the designs seen on the ship. The Vikings were raiding all over Scotland in those days so who knows?... maybe the Vikings sighted Nessie on that same ship, if it ever sailed in Loch Ness!
