I've been working on some custom etchings. I do them by hand, first painting on a resist to protect the blade, then drawing on the lettering with a sharpie. After the sizing, spacing, and lettering looks good, the black is removed with a graver and the surface of the blade is lightly scratched. Ferric chloride is then applied and left a few minutes to eat away at the steel, darkening it's colour a bit too. This method has been used for centuries.
